Construction of the $26.77 million Monash Tennis Centre in the Glen Waverley Sports Hub is a step closer with the project moving into the detailed design phase.
Monash City Council and North East Link are working in collaboration with Tennis Victoria to develop the design, following the completion of final schematic designs by the project’s lead design consultants, Mantric Architecture.
In a joint partnership with Monash City Council, the Andrews Labor Government is investing $21 million in the new tennis and golf precinct to keep local sports clubs thriving as it builds North East Link.
The sports hub will be located on Council-owned land, zoned Public Park and Recreation, that is part of the Glen Waverley Golf Course and currently includes the golf driving range, existing buildings and practice facilities. The Glen Waverley Golf Course will be otherwise unaffected.
Plans for the project include a regional level tennis facility, golf practice facilities, public open space improvements, car parking, a pavilion and cafe and supporting infrastructure.
Another exciting aspect of the project is the potential for environmental sustainability opportunities to be incorporated within the design including water sensitive urban design, sustainably-sourced materials with high recycled content and reduced landfill as well as low energy consumption lighting and appliances.
Member for Mount Waverley Matt Fregon said it was an important step forward for the project.
“It’s great to see the designs coming to life in consultation with the community. Not only will North East Link fix the missing link in our freeway network, but we’re also delivering massive sports upgrades along the way,” he said.
“The new sporting precinct will deliver huge benefits by providing up to 18 new courts and a new multi-sport pavilion.”
Monash mayor Cr Stuart James said he was delighted with the designs and with Mantric’s ability to deliver on Council’s vision for the facility.
“According to the Ausplay Report of 2020, tennis has the highest participation rate of any organised sport in Monash,” Cr James said. “Participation rates, interest in the sport and tennis club membership rates are all higher in Monash than the state average.
“By developing the tennis centre in the Glen Waverley Sports Hub, Council is committed to encouraging the growth of tennis in the region. This is an exciting project for the community and will enhance what is a thriving sports and recreation precinct.”
The design team will continue to finetune the final schematic design into the detailed design, which will be completed early this year.
It is expected that construction will commence in the second half of 2022 and the centre will be ready for play in early-2024.
