The Mining and Energy Union has today called on BHP to follow Qantas’s lead and stop fighting efforts to secure ‘Same Job Same Pay’ for labour hire workers.
“Congratulations to the Flight Attendants Association for their success in using new Same Job Same Pay laws to strike a deal with Qantas for pay rises and more permanent jobs for flight crew,” said MEU General Secretary Grahame Kelly.
“Flight crew and coal miners have shared the blight of labour hire exploitation in our industries. Qantas and BHP have been the biggest corporate drivers of this toxic and divisive employment model in Australia.
“It’s great to see that Qantas has accepted the jig is up. BHP is now the outlier and it’s time for them to do the same.”
The MEU has filed ten Same Job Same Pay applications for labour hire workers at BHP Queensland coal mines, including for workers employed by BHP subsidiary Operations Services. BHP has challenged the MEU’s applications.
