The Territory Top’s all States and Territories for Employment increase

14/11/23

The Territory’s thriving job market and diversifying economy make the Territory a desirable place to live and work.

Data recently released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, show that over the past 12 months, the number of people employed in the Territory has increased by 5.8%.

This is the largest increase of all Australian jurisdictions, with the national average of employment increasing by 3.4% since October 2022.

The financial and insurance services sector reported the strongest result of the industries, with 15.0% more people in jobs across the Territory over the last year. This was followed by ‘health care and social assistance’ (up by 12.0%) and ‘information media and telecommunications’ (up by 8.9%).

Our growing finance sector and booming jobs market has led global organisations such as KPMG to expand their operations in the Northern Territory, with a focus on employing a local workforce.

In August 2023, the second round of the CDU-KPMG Consulting Skills Accelerator Program took place. This collaborative effort between Charles Darwin University (CDU) and KPMG was designed as a comprehensive five-day training program focused on nurturing and retaining essential skill sets within the Northern Territory.

A special addition to this round of the program was the inclusion of a CV clinic conducted by the KPMG emerging talent team. This clinic provided students with an employer perspective regarding job applications and what employers seek in graduate program applications.

Over 150 applications were received for the second round of the CDU-KPMG Consulting Skills Accelerator program, and 30 were subsequently shortlisted.

In a testament to the Territory’s highly skilled population, 10 students from the Accelerator program have been offered interviews with KPMG for permanent roles, marking a significant step in their professional journey.

Quote attributable to Treasurer, Eva Lawler:

“The Territory is a rapidly growing jurisdiction and a place of vast opportunity, providing long-term sustainable employment across an array of sectors.

“Over the course of 12 months, the NT recorded an increase in employee jobs seen nowhere else in the country, this employment boom benefited local and interstate job hunters, alongside 2749 overseas migrants who now call the Territory home.

“It is great to see KPMG expanding their operations in the Territory as a leader in the consultancy field, and even better to see their desire to nurture and retain local talent long into the future.”

Quote attributable to KPMG Australia, Darwin Managing Partner, Derek Campbell:

“The NT is an important market for KPMG and we’re excited to be playing our role in adding new jobs.

“We expect to grow the headcount in our Darwin office by 20% over the next 12 months through both new joiners and bringing senior leaders back to the NT.

“In addition, our partnership with CDU is helping to provide pathways for university graduates to find and build professional careers right here in the Territory.”
