Ahead of Australia Day, Minister Giles shared a message for new citizens.

You are joining a great family of more than 5.7 million people from all over the world who have become Australians since our inaugural citizenship ceremony on 3 February 1949,” Minister Giles said.
“Becoming an Australian citizen is a choice that each one of you has made very carefully. You have worked hard and made sacrifices to be here today, to share your culture, skills and dreams with Australia.
“As new citizens, you will be involved in how the country is governed and, with your vote in elections and referendums, your voice will help shape the future of Australia.
“Today, you become a citizen of a country with a long and enduring history. We are privileged to share this magnificent country with the world’s oldest continuing culture. For more than 60,000 years First Nations peoples have cared for country. Appreciating and understanding this truth, is a vital part of what it means to be Australian. This history is a fundamental part of who we are.
””The diversity of our new citizens strengthens our multicultural society. Your pledge is a formal commitment to Australia and our shared values, as well as the privileges, rights and responsibilities that come with being Australians and believing in respect, freedom, democracy and equality. Welcome.”
