NSW Department of Primary Industries’ (DPI) fifth annual Gone Fishing Day is set to attract thousands of individuals and families to the water this Sunday for a fun-filled day of fishing.
NSW DPI Group Director, Recreational and Aboriginal Fisheries, Pete Turnell, said Gone Fishing Day offers the community a great excuse to get outdoors to celebrate our love of fishing in NSW.
“It really doesn’t matter if you haven’t fished before or if you’re the keenest of anglers, Gone Fishing Day is for everyone, and it’s great to see communities brought together to enjoy one of our most popular recreational activities,” Mr Turnell said.
“Experienced fishers can browse the many stalls from local fishing clubs and groups, get tips from local experts, and introduce their kids to the sport by helping them get involved in the casting competitions and kids clinics.
“Newcomers to fishing can similarly get involved and enjoy fish touch tanks, free goodie bags and the wide range of activities on offer.
“In exciting news for the kids, we’ve also been told that our crab mascot, Snappy, will also make an appearance with some great prizes.”
Free NSW DPI community Gone Fishing Day events for everyone will be run in six locations across NSW on Sunday 20 October, from 9am – 3pm.
- Ballina, Pop Denison Park.
- Moree, Jellicoe Park.
- Lake Macquarie, Pelican Foreshore Reserve.
- Botany Bay, Dolls Point, Peter Depena Reserve.
- Huskisson, Voyager Park.
- Mulwala, Apex Park.
“There will also be forty-eight Community fishing clubs across the state running their own Gone Fishing Day events, thanks to the support of grants from the Recreational Fishing Trusts, so check the DPI website to find one near you,” Mr Turnell said.
“All Gone Fishing Day activities are free, and fishing and casting sessions are run throughout the day – there is no need to register for the event, and no fishing licence will be required on the day, so just come on down.”
