Threads of Change
Climate Change Yarn and Native Animal Textiles exhibition at Burnside
The 100 Year Climate Yarn is a large, crocheted Data-Art wall hanging which tracks the daily maximum temperatures in Adelaide, South Australia over a 100-year period from 1920 to 2020. Temperatures were taken from the Bureau of Meteorology recordings from its West Tce station. Where these were not available, data was taken from the Kent Town station and, on occasion, from archived newspapers. Yarn Artist Sandra Lepore worked with Energy and Climate Specialist Heather Smith to plan the work using colours carefully selected to emphasise the extreme temperatures. The work is made from 100% Australian 8 ply wool.
Textile Wall Art: over many years Neva Jones has developed her craft using a range of techniques with a variety of fabrics. To name a few, these have included clothing, quilts and patterns, wall hangings, collage, hand and machine embroidery, and thread painting. She was inspired further to create machine stitched artworks of Australian birds and animals on discovering the beautiful thread painting of Sophie Standing. To create this art, pattern fabrics are placed on a painted background canvas and free motion machine stitched to enable the fabrics and stitches to enhance the colour, shading and shapes of the image. Neva’s inclusion of endangered Australian animals in her collection is to bring awareness of the reducing populations of these species of wildlife. Part proceeds of sales are donated to their conservation.
