Mildura Rural City Council’s new three-bin service is off to a positive start, more than halving the amount of waste going to landfill in our municipality in its first two weeks.
Since the new service started on 6 July, more than 433 tonnes of organic material has been collected through kerbside green bins, the majority of which may otherwise have gone to landfill.
Combined with almost 200 tonnes of kerbside recycling for the same period this represents a 73 per cent diversion rate from landfill. Before the new three-bin service, our municipality was diverting just 30 per cent of waste from landfill.
Mildura Mayor Simon Clemence commended the community for embracing the new service.
“The significant reduction in the amount of waste going to landfill shows us that the majority of our community have embraced the new service and are using their new green bins, which is a fantastic result,” Cr Clemence said.
“And while I know there are a minority in our community who were concerned in the lead up to the new service starting, I’d encourage them to take note of the significant shift we’ve already seen in our region’s waste stream in just two weeks as a result of the new service.
“By making a few changes to the way we separate our waste at home, and making a conscious effort to use the new green bins, the majority of residents will notice they actually have more waste capacity at home, as well as doing their part to cut waste going to landfill in our municipality.”
Residents can double check when each of their bins will be collected by visiting Council’s website and entering their address in the My Neighbourhood search bar on the front page.
