The Tasmanian Government is continuing to address youth homelessness in Tasmania with a Development Application now lodged to progress the expansion of Thyne House in Launceston.
The expansion will add 20 self-contained one-bedroom units to the existing 30 units at Thyne House, increasing the accommodation options for young people in northern Tasmania who are at risk of or are experiencing homelessness.
The project is part of Thyne House’s transition to an Education First Youth Foyer model, providing integrated learning and life skills as well as supported accommodation – a holistic approach to meeting young peoples’ needs and empowering them to live independently and build better lives for themselves
The project will complement other initiatives we have implemented to increase housing options and reduce homelessness across the state, with the added benefit of supporting jobs in our vital building and construction sector as we continue our recovery from COVID-19.
These include our $4.3 million homelessness support package that has expanded 24-hour Safe Spaces for rough sleepers in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie, a new youth at risk project in Launceston and new youth foyers in Burnie and Hobart.
We are also delivering hundreds of new homes and units under our Affordable Housing Strategy and have committed to delivering an additional 1220 new social housing dwellings over the next three years through the Government’s $3.1 billion construction blitz, providing secure, long-term accommodation for Tasmanians waiting for housing.
We expect work at the Thyne House expansion to begin early next year and be complete by June 2022.
We will continue to do all we can to help Tasmanians into safe and secure housing and give young Tasmanians in need a better start in life.
