Rebecca Keeley and Nicholas Fabbri have been named the recipients of the 2022 Tim Fischer and Bob Hawke John Monash Scholarships respectively, by the General Sir John Monash Foundation.
The two outstanding Australian university graduates will be supported to undertake post-graduate study overseas after receiving the Morrison Joyce Government-funded scholarships through the General Sir John Monash Foundation.
Ms Keeley will undertake a Master of Business Administration at the University of Oxford next year, while Mr Fabbri will also attend Oxford to undertake a Master of Public Policy.
Minister for Education and Youth Alan Tudge said the Coalition Government had provided $10 million to the General Sir John Monash Foundation to support the awarding of the scholarships, named in honour of the late Prime Minister Bob Hawke and the late Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer.
“These scholarships support outstanding students with academic ability and leadership potential to pursue opportunities internationally to further their knowledge, skills and experience,” Minister Tudge said.
“Congratulations to Rebecca and Nicholas on your scholarships. I look forward to seeing what they achieve, and the skills and experience they bring back to Australia.
“Thanks to the General Sir John Monash Foundation for its work to provide scholarships each year to very deserving Australians, and I congratulate all 18 Monash scholarship recipients in 2022.”
Minister for Regionalisation, Regional Communications and Regional Education Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie said the scholarships are a fitting honour to the late Tim Fischer and Bob Hawke and represent exciting opportunities for the recipients.
“I am particularly pleased for Rebecca Keeley, recipient of the Tim Fischer John Monash Scholarship, which supports country scholars,” Minister McKenzie said.
“Studying in rural, regional and remote settings can often have its own unique challenges. Tim Fischer understood those challenges and was a strident supporter of regional Australia and its development into the future.
“Rebecca has done wonderful work in Northern Territory outback communities in the field of speech pathology, and to know that Rebecca intends to give back to her community when she returns from abroad is great to hear.
“Her ambition to work to address the challenges that exist in rural allied healthcare service provision in remote communities is heartening.
“I wish both scholarship recipients the best in their endeavours.”
Each year, the foundation awards a range of scholarships, including one each in the names of Bob Hawke and Tim Fischer, for up to three years of study. The scholarship recipients demonstrate remarkable qualities of leadership and have the ability to inspire others for the benefit of Australia.
