Time For Federal Government To Cough Up

Michael Ferguson, Minister for Infrastructure

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has a 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future to deliver infrastructure that is up to scratch.

The Albanese Government’s claims to have increased funding for Tasmanian roads has been shown to be a fraud.

Further detailed analysis of Tuesday night Australian Government’s Infrastructure Budget schedule by the Tasmanian Department of State Growth has revealed the de-funding, primarily from the Bass Highway.

$80 million in new funding for the Lyell Highway has effectively been taken from funding set aside for the Bass Highway freight and safety efficiency upgrades project.

The Bass Highway is the key freight link for our ports as well as the agriculture, forestry and mining industries.

It is also the chief means of connection for family and friends in the communities of the North-West Coast.

The people of Tasmania’s North-West deserve an honest answer from the Albanese Government on why it tore away Bass Highway funding while claiming the State was actually receiving an increase in roads funding.

While there has been significant additional funding for Local Government Roads in the expanded Roads to Recovery Program and a slight overall increase of $23 million over the forward estimates, the State’s total road and rail component has reduced by $40 million.

The “new” $38.5 million Hobart public transport infrastructure planning projects has been repurposed from the Northern Suburbs Transit Corridor, and no funding has been provided for the Southern Outlet Transit Lane.
