Incoming AFL chief executive officer, Andrew Dillon, could not have been any clearer today that without a stadium at Macquarie Point, there will not be a Tasmanian AFL and AFLW team.
Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, said given this very clear statement to the Public Accounts Committee, now is the time for Labor to tell the Tasmanian people what their true position is on the stadium.
“Rebecca White has been saying for some time now that she supports the team but not the stadium – but it has today been made abundantly clear, yet again, that this isn’t an option,” he said.
“Mr Dillon said the AFL is not in a position to renegotiate so if there is no new stadium at Mac Point, there is no Tasmanian team – it doesn’t get any simpler than that.
“Ms White has said she will do everything she can to kill the stadium – will she now acknowledge that this will officially kill off the team and with it all the hopes and aspirations of past and future generations of Tasmanian footy supporters and players?”
Mr Dillon also praised the high level of transparency around the work done by the Rockliff Liberal Government to secure agreement that landed Tasmania’s long-awaited and historic AFL licence.
“We remain committed to delivering the dream – is Labor committed to killing the team?” Minister Street said.
