Top cops come together for women in policing conference

Presentation at the ACWAP Conference

Collaboration, leadership and workforce culture to top the agenda.

More than 500 delegates from over 20 countries will hear from representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the UK’s Metropolitan Police and the Singapore Police Force at the 2019 Australasian Council of Women and Policing (ACWAP) Conference ‘Collaboration – The future belongs to us’ being held in Canberra from 2 – 5 September.

President of the Australasian Council of Women and Policing, AFP Assistant Commissioner Debbie Platz, says the conference will provide an exciting opportunity for police and law enforcement partners from around the world to come to together with a focus on enhancing and supporting women in law enforcement and other community protection roles,

“We are honoured to have female policing leaders from across the world coming to share their insights and experiences including Commissioner Cressida Dick CBE QPM of the United Kingdom the Metropolitan Police Service, Deputy Commissioner of Singapore Police (Investigation and Intelligence) Florence Chua Siew Lian and Executive Assistant Director of the FBI’s Criminal, Cyber, Response and Services Branch Amy Hess.

“Among highlights will be a commissioners’ panel, involving leaders from New Zealand Police, state and territory police and partner agencies. They will share insights, including identifying the women who have influenced their lives and careers,” Assistant Commissioner Platz said.

The conference theme will focus on how law enforcement responds to women in the communities they serve and how leadership can be strengthened especially for women.

Other key issues to be covered include: leadership; collaboration in investigations; Pacific initiatives; family violence; United Nations; evidence-based policing and workplace reform.

The conference will also feature a special visit from Australia’s favourite family, the Irwins.

AFP Commissioner Andrew Colvin said he was excited to have the conference come to Canberra.

“This is a great opportunity to share learnings and generate critical conversations about the role of women in policing and how law enforcement agencies can better achieve gender equality.”

The conference will incorporate the presentation of the 21st annual Australian Council of Women and Policing Awards Dinner (Wednesday 4 September) to celebrate and showcase the achievements of Australian law enforcement leaders to an international audience.
