Bass Coast Shire Councillors received an update on the Phillip Island and San Remo Visitor Economy Strategy 2035 – Growing Tourism at the August Council Meeting.
The Strategy sets the long-term vision for Phillip Island and San Remo’s visitor economy, with sustainable growth its central focus.
The Strategy aims to ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of this important sector and recognises the importance of both the community and the natural environment in achieving this outcome.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari, said reporting annually on the performance of the Strategy is important to keep Council and the broader community informed.
“The Economic Development and Tourism Team along with partners, Phillip Island Nature Parks, Destination Phillip Island, the Community Tourism Reference Group, Phillip Island Entry Working Group and the Major Events Planning Group have made some fantastic progress towards the goals set out by the Strategy in the past 12 months,” Cr Tessari said.
“Some highlights include achieving Bronze status as part of the process towards obtaining Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification, developing the Tourism Ambassadors Training Program in collaboration with Destination Phillip Island, which is expected to be launched in September and establishing the Major Events Planning Group to bring more major events to Bass Coast.”
The Team and Strategy partners are continuing to deliver on the objectives of the Strategy.
Some of the goals for the next 12 months include working towards gaining full GSTC certification, growing off peak events, developing branding and entry statements for each village on the Island and supporting the development of the Cowes Jetty by Parks Victoria and the Cowes and Rhyll boat ramps by Better Boating Victoria.
