Tourism industry helping shape new parks online booking system

Nick Duigan, Minister for Parks and Environment

Securing a spot at one of Tasmania’s camping spots is set to become easier with a new online booking system.

Minister for Parks and Environment, Nick Duigan, said Tasmania’s world class natural environment and tourism experiences remain a strong drawcard for visitors and locals alike.

“Whether seeking an adventure as part of an iconic multi-day walk, enjoying a guided cave tour or seeking a crystal-clear surf beach as part of a camping experience, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy all that makes Tasmania special,” Minister Duigan said.

“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, our Government is making it easier to find an adventure and book your experience online through our $1.5m commitment to the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service to deliver an online booking system to access Parks products.”

The first meeting of the industry stakeholder working group occurred this week.

“I met the project consultant and key stakeholders from within the tourism industry who are providing their insights and support to the PWS as the project progresses,” Minister Duigan said.

“The new system will deliver a contemporary online booking experience for Parks products and services, including campsites, walks, cave tours and parks passes.

“Visitors will be able to plan their trip with confidence and tourism operators will benefit from improved visitor reporting that will also inform future planning.

“I’d like to extend my support to the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania and local Tasmanian tourism operators for being involved at the grass roots level to help us deliver this significant improvement for the PWS.

“It is terrific to see this important project gaining momentum and I look forward to seeing it take shape over the coming months.”

Initial market sounding has been completed and the business case for the online booking system is currently being finalised. A first stage expression of interest process will open for interested providers in the second half of 2024.

The technical design and procurement phase will occur in 2025.
