Townsville in top 40 rooftop solar suburbs

Deputy Premier, Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning and Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics Infrastructure The Honourable Dr Steven Miles

Postcodes across Queensland have been compared to determine which areas have the most residential rooftop solar, with three Townsville postcodes coming in the top 40.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said over 722,000 Queensland homes have solar.

“Together, Queensland’s homes account to over 3.5 GW capacity, that’s more generation capacity than Qld’s 2 largest power stations combined (Gladstone 1,680MW, Stanwell 1,460MW),” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“I want to thank every Queenslander who has helped lower electricity prices and our carbon footprint by installing solar panels on their home – your home is powering the state.”

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said over 722,000 Queensland homes have solar.

“Townsville’s 4814 postcode is number 21 in the list of suburbs with the most residential rooftop solar in Queensland,” Mr Stewart said.

“And the 4818 postcode covering suburbs in north Townsville including Bohle, Burdell, Mount Low and Bushland Beach has come in at number 31.”

Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said Queensland was leading the nation in rooftop solar.

“Townsville’s 4817 postcode is number 40 in the list of solar suburbs and includes Kirwan, Thuringowa Central, Bohle Plains, Alice River, Hervey Range and Rangewood,” Mr Harper said.

“It’s great to see so many people installing solar panels on their homes and helping to bring down power prices and use cleaner energy.”

Member for Mundingburra Les Walker said the number of North Queenslanders with solar panels was growing.

“I want to thank people for getting solar panels and for being part of Queensland’s biggest power station,” Mr Walker said.

Energy Minister Mick de Brenni said a new solar system is connected every 11 minutes in Queensland.

“While rooftop solar supplied 8.9 per cent of Queensland’s total energy needs last financial year, in the middle of the day it can represent more than 40 per cent of generation,” he said.

Overall Queensland continues to be the nation leader in rooftop solar, outstripping the other states with almost 88,000 more installations than its nearest rival, New South Wales.

Mr de Brenni said the Clean Energy Regulator data shows the southern states are starting to catch on to the important role household systems can play in providing clean energy into the grid.
