Townsville’s economy will receive a significant boost when hundreds of competitors arrive to play in the table tennis World Veterans Tour in September.
Townsville is the only city in the southern hemisphere to host an event in the six round series.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said it will showcase the city to hundreds of visitors.
“This is a significant tournament for the sport so there will be an influx of competitors, officials and fans,” Cr Hill said.
“All these people will need accommodation and food but they can also make the most of our tourism attractions.
“It’s a great opportunity to showcase Townsville on the world stage and lure more sports to north Queensland. “
Cr Hill said Council supported the event because of the benefits it will bring to our city.
“We have waived the normal venue fee at Townsville Stadium to reduce the burden on Townsville Table Tennis Association,” Cr Hill.
“Organisers expect more than 400 competitors to play in the tournament and it’s a great opportunity for residents to go and see a different sport live here in Townsville.”
Townsville is hosting the third round of the World Veterans Tour. The series will also visit China, Austria, the United States, Qatar and Wales.
