Townsville residents are risking a $2135 fine for illegally dumping their waste across the city instead of taking their rubbish to one of five dumps across town.
Almost $50,000 worth of fines have been handed out since September last year to Townsville residents who think it’s OK to toss their rubbish in public spaces like parks, on the side of the road or in bushland.
Townsville City Council Water and Waste Committee chairperson, Russ Cook, said the level of illegal dumping in Townsville was unacceptable.
“Illegal dumping affects the security, safety and environment of our city,” Cr Cook said.
“Since September last year, Council has investigated more than 300 cases of illegal dumping across the city, which has resulted in almost $50,000 in fines being handed out.”
Cr Cook said that choosing between doing the right thing or getting fined should be simple.
“It’s incredible to me that people are willing to risk a fine of more than $2000 rather than take their rubbish to the dump,” he said.
“The Stuart and Hervey Range transfer stations and landfills are open every day of the year except Good Friday and Christmas Day. Green waste and recycling is free to drop off at the transfer stations, so there really is no excuse to not get rid of your waste responsibly.
“It’s also important to speak up if you see illegal dumping by calling Council on 13 48 10.”
