Traffic and tram changes on Swan Street

Travel changes will be in place on Swan Street, Burnley in mid-February, while Yarra Trams undertakes maintenance works.

Swan Street will close between Stanley and Stawell streets from 8pm on Friday, 11 February until 5am on Saturday, 19 February.

Wallen Road Bridge will also close from 8pm on Friday, 11 February until 5am on Monday, 14 February.

The intersection of Burnley and Swan streets will be closed from 5am on Monday, 14 February until 5am on Saturday, 19 February 2022.

Detours will be in place via Hoddle Street, Bridge Road and Alexandra Avenue.

Drivers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

The intersection of Church and Swan streets will remain open to traffic on Church Street throughout the works.

There will be service changes to route 70 with buses replacing trams on portions of the routes.

  • Route 70, 9pm Friday 11 February to last tram Friday 18 February:
    • Route 70 will run a shortened service between Wattle Park and Stop 23 (Hawthorn Bridge), diverting via Power Street and Burwood Road (along Route 75)
    • Shuttle trams run as Route 70a between Waterfront City Docklands and Stop 7C John Caine Arena
  • Route 70, Monday 14 February to Friday 18 February:
    • Buses replace trams between Stop 31 Fordholm Road and Burnley Station, diverting along Madden Grove and Barkley Avenue

Temporary bus stops will be located near existing tram stops where possible. Passengers can expect up to 20 minutes extra travel time.

The $3.96 million upgrade project will renew two sections of tram track along Route 70, including on the Wallen Road Bridge, and deliver upgrades to overhead wires and poles.

These works will deliver improved comfort and safety for passengers, quieter infrastructure and reduce the risk of tram derailment.
