Residents in Doreen are enjoying an easier commute this week, with the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Hazel Glen Drive and Yan Yean Road.
The City of Whittlesea installed the lights as part of the Federal Government’s black spot program, which targets local roads with recurring car accidents.
City of Whittlesea Director Infrastructure and Environment Debbie Wood said the intersection of Hazel Glen Drive and Yan Yean was a hotspot for crashes.
“Between 2014 and 2018 there were six crashes at this intersection, not including regular unreported bingles,” Ms Wood said.
“Our community’s safety is our number one priority and after a number of accidents at this intersection, it was important that lights were put in place to address the safety risks.”
As part of the works, the City of Whittlesea also widened the road to improve access for larger vehicles turning into and out of Hazel Glen Drive.
The installation of the lights is a relief for locals, including Doreen resident Mrs Anna Trigilia who said the traffic lights had given her peace of mind when taking her granddaughter Alannah to and from school.
“The traffic lights make it so much easier to cross the road safely and they keep the traffic moving, especially during peak times,” Mrs Trigilia said.
“They are definitely going to help make Doreen a safer place to live.”
Work will start in the new year to install a traffic island at Mitchells Run, making the intersection left-turn in and out only.
