Police are reminding the community to follow road rules when using trail bikes, following the arrest of a man in the Illawarra for dangerous driving.
About 11.30am yesterday (Wednesday 22 January 2020), officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command observed a trail bike travelling south along Windang Road, Windang.
Police followed the bike and allegedly observed the rider doing wheelies and driving in a dangerous manner.
The trail bike was later seen travelling along Pioneer Drive, Flinders. A short time later, officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District trail bike squad attended a Flinders address and located the trail bike and 18-year-old male rider.
The man was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with resist or hinder police officer in the execution of their duty, drive in a manner dangerous, negligent driving, learner not display L plate, use class A vehicle numberplate not correctly fixed, use unsafe or unserviceable vehicle on road and motorbike rider not wear approved helmet.
He was granted conditional bail and is due to face Port Kembla Local Court on 29 January 2020.
Lake Illawarra Police District Inspector Paul Allman said the arrest is a timely reminder to anyone in possession of a trail bike to adhere to road rules.
“We have a squad of specially trained police officers who are out in the community actively targeting illegal trail bike activity,” Inspector Allman said.
“Not only is this kind of behaviour irritating to other drivers, it is downright dangerous.”
“We will continue to investigate and take legal action against those who choose to do the wrong thing on our roads.”
