29 September 2021

Heemskirk Mountain Bike (MTB) trail builder appointed

After receiving a high level of interest from Australia’s best MTB trail builders and a rigorous evaluation of all tender submissions, Council have appointed Next Level Mountain Bike Pty Ltd to deliver the construction of over 20kms of new trails in the Mount Heemskirk Regional Reserve, near Zeehan.

The company director Marcelo Cardona says “the team are very excited to be a part of this landmark project for the West Coast and feel privileged to build trails in such a beautiful part of Tasmania”

Next Level MTB are a local Tasmanian company based out of the North-West who will bring proven experience and local knowledge to the project, having previously constructed the popular Oonah Hill trail. This project will build on from this, with new trails taking riders further into the Mount Heemskirk Reserve and to the top of the Heemskirk Range. This project will deliver an iconic back country riding experience entirely unique to the West Coast of Tasmania.

Mayor Shane Pitt said: “It’s an exciting time for the West Coast. The MTB opportunities have been designed to create jobs and should go a long way to increasing tourism visitation to the region; by attracting keen interest from state and even international MTB enthusiasts … it’s a spectacular location!

It has taken several years of planning to reach this point. Thanks to generous financial support from the Australian Government with a Community Development Grant of $2.5M towards the West Coast MTB project, Council can continue on delivering an iconic suite of MTB trails on the West Coast.

Construction is set to kick off soon.
