Train Operations return to public hands in landmark transition

RTBU

The Rail Tram & Bus Union (RTBU) is celebrating a major milestone event on February 2, 2025, as the first stage of returning South Australia’s trains and trams to public ownership begins.

We congratulate the Malinauskas Government for its commitment, political will and fortitude to bring public transport back under public control.

On 1 July 2019, the then Marshal Government announced the privatisation of the state’s train and tram networks without a public mandate, proceeding despite widespread opposition by South Australians.

RTBU Members, alongside other unions, fought tirelessly against privatisation, with the SA Labor Party also campaigning strongly to reverse the decision.

That commitment played a key role and ultimately lead to an election platform to return the Trams and Trains back into public hands.

Public Transport is a vital service that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, eases road congestion, and enhances the the liveability of our city.

Bringing operations back under the public control means we can focus on improving and growing our public transport network for South Australians, rather than diverting public funds hand over fist to overseas shareholders.

This transition marks a new era for South Australia’s transport system – one that prioritises people over profit.
