Toowoomba Regional Council is prepared to respond if, and when required, to any situation across the Region should the tropical low (Cyclone Kirrily) track closer to southern Queensland as a rain depression in coming days.
Toowoomba Region Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) chair Cr Geoff McDonald said Council was monitoring forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology that included possible thunderstorms associated with an upper level system and continuing heatwave conditions this long weekend across southern Queensland.
“We want residents to be informed, but not overly concerned about any potential effects from the low depression system,” Mayor McDonald said.
“The course of ex-Cyclones over land is extremely unpredictable, and it is hard to pinpoint precise warnings for specific localities too far in advance. The Bureau’s latest advice (Thursday morning) indicated the system predominantly would affect inland areas of central and western Queensland in coming days.
“The LDMG will coordinate with relevant emergency services and issue relevant advice for our Region if, and when, it becomes available.
“Residents need to be aware of the weather forecasts and make any preparations in accordance with the latest advice when it is issued.
“Motorists are reminded to heed the simple message, ‘If it’s flooded, forget it’. Please observe any warning signs and drive to the conditions.”
Mayor McDonald said Council was making sand available, as a precaution, ahead of the long weekend.
He said residents would need to bring their own sandbags and shovels to fill their bags. (Please only take what you need. Assistance is available for people with mobility issues by contacting the SES)

Mayor McDonald said residents should not underestimate health risks associated with heatwaves.
“Extreme heat can be particularly dangerous, and residents should take measures to avoid working outdoors, especially in the middle of the day,” Mayor McDonald said.
“Young children, the elderly and people with underlying health problems are most at risk, but heat stress can affect anyone.
“Residents should drink plenty of water (avoid alcohol and caffeine), stay out of direct sunlight and check on neighbours.”
