TRC Pierce Street Project – Huge Success

Recently Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) was the recipient of three prestigious awards for the Pierce Street ‘Active Street’ project. These included, Engineer Australia Toowoomba Regional Group’s (TRG) Project of the Year Award, the WeRide Australia ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Luminaries Award for the Built Environment and The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Queensland/Northern Territory (IPWEA-QNT) Excellence Award for Innovation.

The awards were for the recently completed Active Street which delivered the missing link along Pierce Street in the West Creek Active Transport Corridor.

The Engineers Australia’s TRG Project of the Year award aims to recognise top local engineering endeavours and the teams behind these impressive projects.

The national WeRide Australia awards have been held since 2002 and recognise the people, places and programs that contribute to making Australia a better place to ride a bicycle, while the IPWEA-QNT was for excellence in the Project Innovation category.

The Pierce Street Project is the first of its kind in Queensland, encouraging residents to adopt a healthy lifestyle by improving facilities for people riding bikes. The Piece Street Project implemented a shared travel lane which allows people to have equal priority on the road, ensuring a safe environment for all users.

The project implemented street safety measures such as raised platforms, formalised street parking, road markings and signage as well as the introduction of a 30km/h speed limit and new tree plantings. TRC Transport and Drainage Planning portfolio spokesperson Cr Trevor Manteufel said it was great to receive recognition for the Pierce Street ‘Active Street’ Project.

“To be nominated for these awards, alongside so many other remarkable initiatives and projects, is exciting. However, to win the three awards, shows how truly valuable this project is for our community” Cr Manteufel said.

Cr Manteufel said it was also important to commend the project’s team for their innovative work.

“There are always a lot of people involved in completing major works like this project and it is important we acknowledge and thank them for their groundbreaking efforts,” said Cr Manteufel.
