A goal to increase the region’s tree canopy coverage to 40% by 2038 is a step closer after Georges River Council endorsed the consideration of future budget bids to enhance the canopy expansion program.
In 2019, Council adopted the Greater Sydney Region Plan’s target for canopy cover of 40% by 2038 in a strategic move towards a more sustainable future for Georges River.
At its December 2023 meeting, Council approved a plan to seek additional funds to help increase canopy densities on both public and private land and generate community support for the 2038 target.
Mayor Elmir described the tree canopy target as an important way to work towards a greener and more sustainable Georges River for future generations and urged community members and developers to plant more native trees to support the goal.
“Increased tree coverage on public and private land will provide an urban cooling effect. It will also provide biodiversity benefits, habitat for wildlife, and social and mental health benefits for our community,” said Georges River Mayor Sam Elmir.
“While Council will explore ways to increase tree planting on public land, we still need everyone’s help to meet this target. Let’s work together to strike the right balance between urban development and environmental preservation. By taking proactive steps today, Georges River Council can ensure a healthier tomorrow for future generations.”
Tree planting is one of the simplest and most effective ways of tackling climate change caused by greenhouse gas. As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂), a major greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.
Reports to monitor Council’s progress towards the target will be provided every two years.
