Tree removal Smith Street Mall

Darwin City Council

A Yellow Flame tree (Peltophoruim pterocarpum) around the centre of the Smith Street Mall, near the children’s playground, needs to be removed as it poses a risk to public safety.

A qualified arborist has assessed the tree and determined that the tree’s root system has “heaved” and the tree will fall unless it is removed. This means the entire root system of the tree has shifted in the soil and is the first stage of the tree toppling over. There are no viable options to stabilise the tree. The City of Darwin only removes trees as a last resort.

The works to remove the tree will take place on Tuesday 28 February. To help minimise the impact on businesses in the mall the works will be conducted after 5.30pm and take around four hours to complete.

It is planned to avoid any stump grinding in a bid to keep noise levels to minimum, the site will be left clean, tidy, and safe.

City of Darwin officers are currently considering options for landscaping and replanting following the removal, and landscaping works will commence once a final design has been considered.
