An independent tribunal has ruled how much councillors across Victoria should get paid.
The Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal recently determined base allowances for mayors, deputy mayors and councillors across the state, which the tribunal backdated to 18 December 2021.
This included a new allowance for deputy mayors. Knox’s Deputy Mayor was elected prior to the tribunal’s decision and will remain in place until the end of the term on 14 November 2022.
Under the new Local Government Act 2020, Council has no say in how much a councillor, mayor or deputy mayor gets paid.
Council is seeking advice on the implications of the tribunal’s ruling and is considering its options for future council appointments.
The Deputy Mayor supports the role of Mayor and represents Council when the Mayor is unavailable.
In reaching its decision, the tribunal considered public submissions.
