Tropical Cyclone Jasper has developed in Solomon Sea

A Tropical Low over the Solomon Sea has now been upgraded to a Tropical Cyclone.

The Tropical Cyclone has been named Jasper. It is the first tropical cyclone to develop in the for the 2023-24 Tropical Cyclone season.

Tropical Cyclone Jasper is forecast to strengthen and track south-southwest towards the northeast Coral Sea. Tropical Cyclone Jasper has a high chance of reaching Severe Tropical Cyclone (category 3) intensity during Wednesday.

This weekend, Tropical Cyclone Jasper is likely to move through the central Coral Sea as a Severe Tropical Cyclone.

There is the potential for Tropical Cyclone Jasper to move near the Queensland coast next week. There is large uncertainty as to which parts of the Queensland coast will be impacted.

The Bureau will issue regular updates to help keep communities informed as the situation evolves over the coming days.

The next Tropical Cyclone advice will be issued by 11pm AEST Tuesday.
