Tropical Cyclone Owen expected to bring rain to Townsville

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group has moved to ‘Alert’ as Tropical Cyclone Owen has reformed in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The latest track map from the Bureau of Meteorology shows the Cyclone crossing in the Gulf of Carpentaria before weakening as it moves towards the east.

Townsville Local Disaster Management Group Chair Mayor Jenny Hill said weather predictions and patterns would be monitored closely over the coming days.

“We are expecting increased rainfall over the weekend – up to 100mm is predicted for Saturday which would be great if it falls over our catchment area,” Cr Hill said.

“These types of rains are normally considered typical of a wet season but residents should still be cautious.

“At this stage the Townsville Local Disaster Management Group will monitor the situation closely as these weather events can be unpredictable.

“Residents are urged to be alert but not alarmed and we encourage them to monitor weather updates.

“We will update the community with any new relevant information as we receive it.”
