Construction is underway on two new Government Regional Officer Housing (GROH) properties in Laverton, helping to provide a boost to the number of homes available for critical State Government workers in the Goldfields-Esperance town.
The GROH program provides housing to government workers in regional areas to ensure essential services can be delivered.
The two homes were designed by Perth-based architectural firm Broadhurst and Bott Architects. They were designed for the climate and include easy-care gardens with landscaping endemic to the Goldfields-Esperance region.
One home will be three-bedroom and the other will be two-bedroom, with both homes due to be complete by the middle of this year.
One house will be allocated to Child Protection and Family Services for staff providing child protection services and the other will be allocated to the Department of Education for teacher housing.
The homes are being constructed by Western Australian building and construction company CLPM, with around 10 Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander contractors being employed on the project.
There are currently 17 new GROH properties under construction across the State with planning underway for a further 35 properties.
The McGowan Government has committed $200 million to expand and improve the State’s GROH stock across regional WA over the coming four years.
As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:
“Ensuring regional communities have access to critical State Government workers such as teachers and police officers is essential and these two new homes will help to meet demand for more GROH properties in Laverton.
“The McGowan Government is investing $200 million over the coming four years to improve and expand the State’s stock of GROH properties.
“Our Government is acutely aware of the housing challenges we face and that is why we are significantly boosting housing supply through measures including more than $2 billion of direct investment in new social housing and GROH, supporting residential development in regional WA through our $116 million Regional Land Booster package and helping thousands of Western Australians build homes with our $20,000 Building Bonus Grant.”
