Two more charged after raids at Villawood Immigration Detention Centre, NSW

A further two men have been arrested and charged over an alleged criminal syndicate operating within the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre.

In December 2019, detectives from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command established Strike Force Leahy to investigate the activities of a criminal syndicate believed to be operating from within the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre.

Following inquiries by Strike Force Leahy detectives, an 18-year-old man was arrested at Sutherland Police Station yesterday (Monday 13 January 2020). He has been charged with obtain property by deception, attempt to obtain property by deception, dispose of property believed to be stolen, and participating in a criminal group. The man, from Blacktown, was refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local court today (Tuesday 14 January 2020).

A 34-year-old man was arrested yesterday at Bowral Police Station and charged with dispose of property believed to be stolen, and participating in a criminal group, and drive whilst disqualified. The man, from Moss Vale, was refused bail to appear at Goulburn Local Court today.

Police allege the men were involved in the purchase of motor vehicles using fraudulently-obtained credit cards.

Four men – aged 20, 34, 49 and 27 – remain before the courts after being arrested in the centre and charged last Friday (10 January 2020).
