Two Mornington Peninsula projects have won their category at the 50th Keep Victoria Beautiful Tidy Towns – Sustainable Community Awards.
St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Crib Point was among the winners for its student-led Sustainability Team.
Students concerned about the school’s waste management system conducted bin observations, audits and held conversations with students and teachers. This work has resulted in waste items such as bottle caps and old textas being sent to facilities to be recycled in to new products such as wheelchairs and prosthetic arms.
Seawinds Boomerang Bags in Capel Sound was also awarded in the Resource Recovery & Waste category for their partnership with Uniforms 4U, helping to repair or alter donated school uniforms to families in need around the Peninsula.
Shire Mayor David Gill congratulates all finalists and award winners for this year’s Tidy Town Awards.
“I commend our two award winning groups as well as the six other projects that made it to the finals, also a huge achievement.
“Well done and thank you for leading the way on sustainable action in our community”.
Briars Ward Councillor and Keep Victoria Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards councillor representative Bev Colomb said “from local primary schools to community groups, it’s fantastic to see the whole community involved in protecting our environment”.
Council’s fellow Keep Victoria Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards councillor representative and Briars Ward Councillor Rosie Clark added “congratulations to all of our local category finalists and winners – your work for our community is truly invaluable”.
