A former Army officer diagnosed with breast cancer 23 years ago has bravely ‘left it all behind’, shaving her head in support of the Cancer Council as she retires from Defence.
Director of ADF Reserves and Employer Support Narelle Powers first dyed her hair bright blue and then shaved her head, raising awareness and funds for the important cause.
Ms Powers returned from active service in East Timor in late January of 2001 and not long after Anzac Day, discovered a small lump in her breast. She underwent a lumpectomy and numerous surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy.
Ms Powers said she hopes that “one day a cancer diagnosis is as simple and short-lived an experience as shaving your head”.
“I encourage all women to be on the forefront with checking their breasts,” she said.
Head of Reserve and Cadet Support Division Major General Douglas Laidlaw thanked Ms Powers for her service and even jumped in to do some of the shaving.
“Narelle has had a wonderful career,” Major General Laidlaw said.
“She has left a legacy, building an amazing team and leaving the workplace better than she found it.
“I thank her for her service in the Army and across many avenues in her career, she will be missed.”
