An unaccompanied learner-driver detected travelling at 170km/h was one of a number of drivers caught speeding across the state this weekend.
Around 9.50pm on Saturday 27 June 2020, a VW Polo was detected driving approximately 170km/h in a 100km/h zone.
Officers attached to Manning – Great Lakes Highway Patrol stopped the vehicle and spoke to the 19-year-old driver, who presented a learner’s licence.
Her licence was suspended on the spot and she was charged with exceed speed (over 45km/h), unaccompanied learner, no ‘L’ plates, not keep left on road with speed limit about 80km/h.
In an unrelated incident, a man was detected driving 163km/h at Walgett in northern NSW.
About 4.15pm on Friday 26 June 2020, officers attached to Central North Highway Patrol detected a Ford Falcon travelling at 163km/h in a 100km/h zone on Castlereagh Highway, Walgett.
Officers pulled the driver over and a subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly found syringes containing ice and 450g of cannabis.
The driver, a 31-year-old woman, was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed (over 45km/h), and her licence was immediately suspended for six months.
The passenger, a 52-year-old man, was issued a future court attendance notice for possess prohibited drug (between small and indictable quantity), supply prohibited drug (between small and indictable quantity), and supply prohibited plant (between small and indictable quantity). He is due to appear at Walgett Local Court on Tuesday 28 July 2020.

- About 11.20pm on Friday 26 June 2020, a Mitsubishi Lancer was detected travelling at 139km/k in a 70km/h zone on Woodville road at Old Guildford. Officers attached to Fairfield Highway Patrol stopped the vehicle and spoke to the 33-year-old driver. He was suspended from driving for six months and his vehicle was seized and impounded for a period of three months. He was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed (over 45km/h).
- At 5.17pm on Saturday 27 June 2020, a Kia Carnival was detected travelling 254km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Pacific Highway at Coolongolook. The 33-year-old male driver was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed (over 45km/h) and his licence was suspended for six months.
- About 7.10pm on Saturday, a BMW M3 was stopped by police after it was detected travelling at 114km/h in a 50km/h zone at Little Bay Road, Little Bay. The 30-year-old man was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed (over 45km/h) and his licence was suspended.
- About 10.45pm on Saturday, a Subaru Forrester was detected travelling at 98km/h in a 60km/h zone on Failford Road, Failford. Police stopped the vehicle and the 19-year-old male driver presented a provisional licence. He was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed (over 45km/h) and his licence was suspended for three months.
- At 10.40 on Saturday, police saw a Honda Accord and a Lexus following each other on Woodville Road at Old Guildford, allegedly reaching speeds up to 130km/h. Officers pulled the Lexus over and spoke to the driver, a 21-year-old man, who was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed (over 45km/h) and his licence was suspended. Officers then attended the registered address for the Honda and spoke to the 18-year-old, who was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed (over 45km/h) and had his licence suspended for six months.
- About 5.45pm on yesterday (Sunday 28 June 2020), a Ford Focus was detected at 129km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Pacific Highway at Coolongolook. Police stopped the vehicle, which had four passengers, and the 36-year-old male driver presented a P1 licence. The driver was issued infringement notices for exceed speed P1 (over 30km/h), not comply P1 passenger restrictions after disqualification, not comply P1 licence conditions not display P plates. His licence was suspended for six months.
