Union Roundtable opportunity to listen

Jeremy Rockliff, Premier

Today’s Roundtable with unions was an open and frank discussion in order to progress current wage negotiations.

This meeting was about listening to unions and we have heard concerns around retention and recruitment, and also around cost-of-living pressures.

We fully understand and recognise the reality of these pressures and we acknowledge there is a strong case for wage growth.

I have also indicated to unions today, that the Government will consider a one-off payment if it will alleviate cost-of-living and retention pressures.

Any pay rise moving forward must be fair, reasonable, and affordable, keeping in mind that every one per cent above the current budget allocation represents a cost of $397 million over four years.

It is my expectation that a high-level offer is made next week, noting there will still be a need for discussions with lead negotiators on conditions that are unique to each Agreement.

We have always said we will negotiate in good faith and I would ask unions to do the same, and reconsider any planned industrial action.

Our Government wants a workforce that is strong, professional, and valued, with clear career pathways.

I thank everyone representing their unions for meeting with me today in a positive, constructive and frank way.

We recognise how hard public servants have worked throughout the pandemic and we are committed to delivering them a fair, affordable and well-deserved pay rise.
