Unlicensed 16-year-old charged with reckless driving and evading police

A 16-year-old male from Launceston has been charged after evading police and driving in excess of 130km/h, without a licence.

The youth, who only holds a Novice L1 licence, evaded police in Devonport about 8:30pm on Wednesday, 8 April, exceeding speeds of 130km/h on the Bass Highway and travelling on the wrong side of the road in a built up area.

The vehicle was spiked near Tugrah and the youth was arrested a short time later. He was charged in relation to this incident, as well as two other evades earlier this week in Launceston and Burnie.

He has been charged with 3x counts of Evade Police (Aggravated Circumstances), 3x counts of Reckless Driving and 3x counts of Learner driver driving unaccompanied by licenced driver. The vehicle was seized for 3 months.

He has also been charged with 2x counts of failing to comply with a direction of the Director of Public Health, due to not remaining at his primary residence unless for essential purposes.

The youth was bailed to appear in a Launceston Youth Justice Court in July.
