Unruly WA traveller fined and banned

A 30-year-old West Australian man who was allegedly disruptive and argumentative on an intrastate flight has been issued an infringement and a flight ban.

The Australian Federal Police has issued the FIFO worker a $500 infringement for disorderly behaviour, while Qantas has instituted a flight ban. The fine doubles to $1000 if the man does not pay it within 28 days.

AFP officers met the man at Perth Airport when he disembarked from a flight from Karratha on 6 February (2022).

They were responding to reports from Qantas that the man had allegedly been intoxicated and unruly during the flight, including being argumentative and aggressive towards flight crew and other passengers.

AFP officers have issued the man with an infringement for disorderly behaviour in public, contrary to section 74A(2)(a) of the Criminal Code (Cth).

AFP Sergeant Shona Davis said there is no excuse for this type of behaviour.

“Bad behaviour on aircraft or at airports is not only disrespectful, it can put the safety of other people at risk,” Sergeant Davis said.

“The AFP and our aviation partners have no tolerance for antisocial or dangerous behaviour and we will take action if people do not comply with legislation or other lawful requirements.”
