Best ever rankings result highlights University’s impactful research and teaching achievements
The University of Wollongong (UOW) has been named as one of the world’s top universities, according to the 20th edition of the world’s most-consulted university rankings.
The 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings, released today (Wednesday, 28 June) by global higher education analyst QS, sees UOW place 162nd in the world and 12th in Australia.
The result is UOW’s highest-ever global ranking and an improvement of 23 places on the last year’s ranking. This achievement places UOW in the top one per cent of universities worldwide and reflects its commitment to excellence in research, sustainability, international collaboration, and diversity.
UOW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Patricia M. Davidson congratulated staff for pushing the boundaries of knowledge and making an impact on the lives of the people globally.
“We are thrilled with this outstanding global ranking, which is a testament to the unwavering dedication and exceptional talent within the UOW community,” Professor Davidson said.

One of the highlights was an outstanding performance in the research citations per faculty category, where UOW ranked 60th globally. This achievement was led by the University’s high-quality research programs in Materials Science, Earth and Environmental Science, Engineering, Nursing, Chemistry, Education, and Law. UOW’s dedication to producing impactful research in these fields has garnered international recognition and solidified its position as a leading research institution.
UOW also demonstrated remarkable strength in the new sustainability indicator, ranking an impressive equal 75th globally. This success is driven by a commitment to sustainability and social impact in both research and education. UOW’s dedication to sustainable practices is evident through initiatives such as the (SBRC), and the (ANCORS). These research centres have significantly contributed to advancing knowledge and understanding in sustainable development, environmental preservation, and social responsibility.
UOW’s global campus footprint and diverse international staffing profile have also played a pivotal role in its exceptional ranking. With an International Faculty ranking of 146 globally, UOW has fostered a richly multicultural environment that enhances the learning experience for students and promotes global perspectives that have an impact on the daily lives of people.
The University has performed exceptionally well in the new International Research Network indicator, reflecting the institution’s robust international research collaborations. By actively engaging with renowned researchers and institutions worldwide, UOW has expanded its global network and contributed to ground breaking discoveries and advancements across various disciplines.
