Detectives from Correctional Services Investigation Unit (CSIU) have charged two men in relation to the alleged murder of Benn Schinkel in October last year.
On 22 October 2022, 31-year-old Benn Schinkel was located unresponsive inside the activities building of Capricornia Correctional Centre at Etna Creek near Rockhampton.
He was transported to Rockhampton Hospital, where he passed away on October 23.
It will be alleged that Benn’s injuries were sustained as the result of a serious assault.
CSIU detectives with assistance from the Homicide Investigation Unit established Operation Uniform Carlow to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Following an extensive 13-month investigation detectives yesterday, December 6, arrested two men.
A 25-year-old man formerly of Townsville and a 36-year-old man formerly of Mackay have both been charged with one count each of murder and extortion.
It will be alleged both men were prisoners in Capricornia Correctional Centre at the time of the incident and remained in corrections custody at a Wacol facility at the time of their arrest.
Both men are expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court today, Thursday December 7.
Police continue to urge anyone with information regarding this investigation to come forward.
