On International Women’s Day, 2023, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) announced the launch of its new “Master of Arts in Gender and Development” (hybrid format), in cooperation with the University for Peace (UPEACE). The announcement marked the continuation of a long-standing partnership, which combines the academic strength of UPEACE with the world-class executive-style training of UNITAR.
This master’s programme aims to equip students with critical knowledge about gender studies in its intersections with development studies, focusing on a variety of topics, including but not limited to, women’s empowerment, queering development, gender in its intersections with environment and development, the interplay of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disability among other factors with development work. In addition, it prepares them with the required skills for a successful international career in a variety of fields – including, but not limited to, diplomacy, development, politics, social work, human resources, human rights, teaching, research, and policy institutes/think tanks.
Students can also opt for the Certificate in Gender and Development (hybrid format).
All hybrid programmes will consist of an on-campus learning component, which will take place at the University for Peace, located in San José, Costa Rica, as well as an online learning component.
The “Master of Arts in Gender and Development” is part of a series of graduate programmes offered by UPEACE and UNITAR, including:
- Master of Arts in Development Studies and Diplomacy (online and hybrid formats)
- Master of Arts in Environmental Social Sustainability in Business (online and hybrid formats)
- Master of Arts in International Law and Diplomacy (online and hybrid formats)
- Master of Arts in International Law and the Settlement of Disputes (on-campus, online, and hybrid formats)
In addition to the above master’s degrees, certificate programmes are also available for all programmes, offered online.
Field Visits: Students enrolled in UPEACE-UNITAR programmes will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the very heart of diplomacy, and the city of peace and justice, through optional field visits to Geneva, Switzerland and/or The Hague, Netherlands, respectively. A high level of direct exposure to policy practitioners and diplomatic settings will give participants a robust, first-hand understanding of the United Nations system, diplomacy, and international law. Students will have the opportunity to visit different international organizations, and network with other diplomats, personnel of permanent missions accredited to the UN, civil servants of international organizations, and civil society representatives.
