Construction for the new cool room at Port Pirie Hospital has now been completed, the result of a $2 million investment from the Marshall Liberal Government.
Minister for Health and Wellbeing Stephen Wade said the cool room and other upgrades underway at Port Pirie hospital are part of the Marshall Liberal Government’s $140 million commitment over the next 10 years to provide essential asset sustainment and compliance works across regional hospitals.
“We recognise the importance of boosting regional health services across South Australia and the upgrades will ensure people throughout the region can continue to receive the best possible patient services in well maintained facilities,” Minister Wade said.
“The $2 million upgrades at Port Pirie hospital will provide improvements to the hospital’s electrical system, and include a $250k cool room and a brand-new back-up power generator, delivering more efficient care to patients when they need it most.
“We are committed to improving our regional health services and infrastructure to better support the health and wellbeing of all country South Australians.”
The $140 million Regional Asset Sustainment Fund is significantly improving the amenity of regional hospitals and health infrastructure in South Australia.
Replacements or upgrades underway across regional South Australia include replacing mechanical and electrical systems, generators, nurse call systems, telephone switchboards, air conditioning and heating units, fire response systems, rooves and cool rooms.
Yorke and Northern Local Health Network Director of Corporate Services, Paul Fahey, said the upgrades at Port Pirie Hospital will ensure people living in the Port Pirie region can continue to access the same high standards of health care as metropolitan patients.
“By upgrading electrical switchboards, distribution boards and the cool room, we are able to provide high quality care closer to home for many years to come,” Mr Fahey said.
“The new back-up generator will also ensure our hospital is fully equipped in the event of loss of mains power or other emergency events.”
The construction tender for the electrical infrastructure upgrade was awarded to Expert Data Cabling.
The upgrades are expected to be completed in June 2020.
