Upgrades at Warmun Community Aged Care facility

  • McGowan Government to invest $500,000 to remediate Warmun Community Aged Care facility to allow operations to get underway
  • Providing options for people aging in Warmun and surrounds to remain on Gija Country
  • Creating job and training opportunities for Warmun Community residents into the future
  • The McGowan Government is supporting Warmun Community to develop their aged care service through a $500,000 remediation of the existing, underutilised aged care facility.

The $12-million-dollar facility was built in 2014 as part of the reconstruction effort of Warmun community following the devastating flood event of 2011, however has never become fully operational because of issues with plumbing and water infrastructure.

The State Government, through the Kimberley Development Commission, has been working to assist Warmun Community Incorporated with the remediation works and to ensure the Commonwealth Department of Health’s support to develop the capacity for Warmun Community Incorporated to be a viable, high quality, residential aged care service provider over the next three years.

Enhancing the aged care services will create training and job opportunities for Community residents in aged care delivery and support work, along with facility management skills such as catering and laundry.

The funding and contract for remediation works will be administered by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.

As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

“We were concerned that this facility had lay vacant since being constructed in 2014 and are working hard to ensure it can provide a very important aging in place option for local elders.

“The Warmun Aged Care facility will not only support the aging community but will provide training and job opportunities for local residents.

“The Warmun Community is committed to improving the health and well-being of its aging residents and to achieving a sustainable future for the Community, and our government is working to support Warmun.”
