The ACT Government is building the infrastructure our growing city needs with construction tenders now released for upgrades to Kippax and Weston group centres.
“Upgrades across Canberra as part of our suburban infrastructure program are well underway with final documents being prepared for improvements to both of these popular shopping precincts,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel.
“The preliminary design for improvements along Hardwick Crescent was developed in response to the Kippax Group Centre Master Plan 2019 and following extensive site investigations and targeted engagement with local businesses and community groups.
“Construction is expected to kick off in May this year and will include improvements along the section of Hardwick Crescent between Luke Street and the service station. Based on community feedback, improvements will include making Kippax a better place for businesses and residents.”
Improvements to Kippax include the following:
- Wider and improved shopfront pavement, allowing space for outdoor cafes and public outdoor furniture
- Increased accessibility along shopfronts
- An enhanced streetscape with new plantings and landscaping
- Increased amenity, including a new bike rack and rubbish bin
- Improved safety for pedestrians with new pedestrian crossings and lighting improvements
- Direct pedestrian links between the currently separated commercial centres on either side of the large carparks.
“Weston Creek’s main street will soon see more trees and improved landscaping, additional space for outdoor dining and improvements to pedestrian safety,” said Minister Steel.
“Brierly street is a flourishing cafe and restaurant strip and these upgrades will provide more inviting spaces for the community and businesses to enjoy.
“Like the upgrades at Kippax, we also expect construction to start in May this year.”
Improvements to Brierly Street include the following:
- Wider verges, allowing space for outdoor cafes and public outdoor furniture
- An enhanced streetscape with new plantings and landscaping
- Increased amenity, including new seating, bike racks and rubbish bins
- Improved safety for pedestrians with new pedestrian crossings and lighting improvements.
These works are part of our program for upgrades to suburban infrastructure across Canberra.
They follow recently completed shop upgrades at Kaleen, with significant improvements soon to be completed at Duffy and Campbell local shops.
