The Andrews Labor Government is upgrading the Glenferrie Road bridge in Malvern to ensure it can continue to support all road users for years to come.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said major works to strengthen the bridge – located above Malvern Station – will get underway this week, along with tram track renewal works.
The project will allow all trams to operate on Route 16 without restriction, reduce congestion and ensure motorists can safely keep moving throughout the area.
The works include demolishing the existing footpath, building a new bridge deck and reinstating the existing road with upgraded tram tracks.
Service relocation works have already taken place under both footpaths in preparation for these major works.
It follows bridge strengthening and tram track renewal upgrades along Glenferrie Road across Gardiners Creek between Barkers Road and Riversdale Road, which were completed at the start of last year.
Crews will be working day and night from 10pm Friday 7 April to 5am Friday 21 April to complete the work as quickly as possible, weather permitting.
Glenferrie Road will be closed in both directions between Dandenong Road and Evandale Road throughout the works, with traffic management and signed detours in place.
Buses will replace trams on Route 16 between Stop 48 and Stop 80, resuming from the first tram on Friday 21 April. Pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained at all times.
