Colac Highway Patrol officers have stopped a tragedy waiting to happen after detecting a vehicle travelling at excessive speed on the Princes Highway last night.
Officers were performing speed detection on Princes Highway in Irrewarra around 10.30pm when they detected a 2010 silver Holden Utility travelling at an alleged speed of 141km/h in an area with a limit of 100km/h.
Police attempted to intercept the driver, who failed to stop, allegedly increasing speed to 203 km/h.
Police did not pursue the vehicle due to the high speed and risk to the public.
A short time Colac Highway Patrol officers patrolling the Princes Hwy in Winchelsea detected the same Holden utility allegedly travelling at 218km/h.
The driver allegedly slowed for the traffic lights and attempted to turn left at Murrell Street where police intercepted and arrested the driver.
A 24-year-old Camperdown man will be charged on summons with conduct endangering life, failing to stop, speed dangerous, manner dangerous, exceeding the speed limit, and reckless exposure of police officer to risk by driving.
His car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1,170.
