A 23 year old Stanley man has been charged with several offences after he was caught travelling over 111 km/hr in a 60 km/hr residential area in Burnie.
Tasmania Police detected a white Subaru Liberty travelling at excessive speed on Old Surrey Road, Havenview about 2:40pm on Saturday August.
The male driver tested positive to a roadside drug test and subsequently provided an oral fluid sample for analysis.
He will be summonsed to appear in court for unlicensed driving, excessive speed and drug driving, pending the analysis results.
The vehicle, which was borrowed, has been impounded for a 3-month period.
“Travelling at this speed in the middle of the day and in a residential area is extremely concerning,” said Sergeant James Scicluna.
“In July, members from just the Western Road and Public Order Services detected 16 people travelling in excess of 30 km/hr over the speed limit on the North West Coast. Disappointingly, we are seeing an increase in this type of high-risk driving behaviour.”
Excessive speed is a well-documented factor in fatalities and serious crashes. Tasmania Police would encourage all motorists to stop and consider the potential consequences to their loved ones and the wider community that excessive speed can cause.
