As a provider of aged care and health care services to older Victorians, the State Government has worked closely with the our public aged care residential services sector to provide a submission that represents the government’s experience in delivering health, aged care, human services, police and justice services to older Victorians.
The submission highlights innovations in Victoria’s health and aged care services – such as legislated nurse to resident ratios to ensure sufficient numbers of nurses in high care public sector residential aged care services.
The submission also focuses on opportunities to create a well-resourced, high quality, fit for purpose and sustainable aged care system with clearly articulated roles and responsibilities. This includes:
- Supporting choice and enabling personalised approaches, including supporting people to stay in their homes for as long as possible
- Focusing on safety, quality and continuous improvement
- Ensuring services are well-resourced, including through minimum staffing requirement, and sustainable for the future
- Integrating health care for older people so that day to day clinical care for people in nursing homes can be provided by qualified staff through the aged care system Developing a strong specialist disability accommodation market to ensure younger people can be supported to access the right residential care and not end up in nursing homes
- Ensuring aged care services are inclusive and able to support the diverse Victorian community
- Increasing support and legal rights to carers of older Australians.
