Victoria Police recognised for multicultural strengths

Exemplary Victoria Police employees across the state have this week been recognised in the Victorian Multicultural Awards for Excellence 2020.

The annual awards recognise the outstanding achievements of Victorians and organisations who strengthen multiculturalism.

In lieu of an in-person ceremony held every year at Government House, the awards were announced in a special online presentation, hosted by the Victorian Multicultural Commission on Wednesday.

Victoria Police employees took home 12 awards from four categories including the Police Community Exemplary Award and Police Annual Multicultural Award.

Among the Victoria Police recipients was Mill Park Sergeant Damian Lehmann, who spearheaded a project to better understand a suicide cluster of South Asian women in the City of Whittlesea.

His dedication to reducing isolation and supporting women from the South Asian community earned him the Police Annual Multicultural Award.

Eastern Region officer Senior Constable Sara Coe was also recognised for her efforts in providing reassurance and support to CALD communities, including international students.

Senior Constable Coe was commended for her dedication in working closely with victims of robberies, to help build their trust and confidence in police.

A list of all Victoria Police employee award recipients is available at the Victorian Multicultural Commission website:

As noted by Chief Commissioner Shane Patton

“Community engagement is at the heart of policing. To earn trust and ensure meaningful engagement, we must have a deep understanding of the needs of our entire community.

“These awards recognise the commitment of our passionate employees in supporting diversity and engagement with our wonderfully multicultural and diverse community.

“Congratulations to all our Victoria Police employees who have been honoured in this year’s awards for their outstanding efforts in contributing to a safer and more cohesive society.”
