The Victorian Goldfields have been added to Australia’s World Heritage Tentative List. This is the first step in the World Heritage nomination process.
The Victorian Goldfields are the best surviving goldrush landscape in the world.
It is an area of enduring First Nations history. The landscapes embody natural features and attributes from the region’s Dja Dja Wurrung and Gunaikurnai peoples.
Six sites spanning central and southern Victoria have been recognised in the listing. The possibility of more areas will be added as the nomination is developed. Sites include:
- Castlemaine Goldfields and Historic Townships
- Creswick and the Deep Lead Landscape
- Bendigo Historic Urban Landscape
- Great Nuggets Historic Landscape
- Walhalla Alpine Mining Landscape
- Lalgambuk (Mt Franklin).
To be included on the World Heritage List, sites must meet set criteria. Nominations for the World Heritage List are only considered if a site is included on the Tentative List. This process can take between 5 to 10 years.
This is the first step in the World Heritage nomination process. It marks an important milestone to further preserve and protect area for future generations.
