Melbourne diners are claiming a whopping $450,000 a day through the Midweek Melbourne Money scheme as it continues to draw people back into the city for work and play.
Eased restrictions have turbo-charged the $5 million scheme, with half of the funds gobbled up within just six days.
The scheme, which offers a 30 per cent discount for diners between Monday and Thursday, is rippling throughout the city, with 40 per cent of patrons saying they also shopped at city retail during their visit.
Another 53 per cent of diners said the initiative influenced their decision to return to the office.
The scheme applies to all restaurants, cafes and bars where meals are served across the municipality, from the CBD to Lygon Street, Southbank, North Melbourne and Docklands.
Midweek Melbourne Money is being offered through the $200 million Melbourne City Revitalisation Fund – a joint partnership between the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government.
The scheme will end when the $5 million fund is exhausted.

“Melbourne is so hungry for Midweek Melbourne Money, we’re expecting funds to run out sometime next week,” the Lord Mayor said.
“Diners are claiming an incredible $450,000 a day on average between Monday and Thursday, compared to $250,000 daily last round, which also included weekend dining.
“The scheme has given a fantastic boost to weekday retail and entertainment, as punters pour back into the city for work and play.
“If you want to take advantage of the scheme, it’s time to make plans to dine in the coming days to make sure you don’t miss out.
“I encourage everyone with a city-based office to dust off their work wear and make a day of it – whether you’re enjoying a long lunch or meeting up with colleagues after work.”

“Restaurants across Melbourne are reaping the rewards of our Midweek Melbourne Money scheme, which is helping deliver a consistent flow of business throughout the week,” Cr Campbell said.
“The average Midweek Melbourne Money bill comes to $146, with businesses reporting higher than usual spends.
“The scheme has provided a much needed boost to both hospitality and retail businesses. 40 per cent of patrons who have taken up Midweek Melbourne Money have told us they also shopped at city retailers during their visit.”
